Medicines and Miracles 3

Not everything in this world has an explanation, and sometimes it is best not to go looking for one.

Room 913

Another new day and Mehr is slowly getting accustomed to the new environment, while her initial experience had been a rollercoaster ride, she's finally making friends in her new job.

"Arey yaar ye roaster mei phir se mera naam daal diya", Vinay exclaimed in an agitated fashion.
"Already teen bari duty lagg chuki yaar meri last month". He said with a sigh

"Sorry bhai, mera koi role nahi, I just follow rules. Decide Virat Sir kartey hain" Nirvan shrugged sympathetically.

"Hadd hai yaar, pura din  ke kaam ke baad itna tiring hota hai na", Plus the work stress is building up, "Main shaadi karne ki umar mein, do bachcho ka baap lagne laga hun already" Nirvan could'nt help but laugh at Vinay's pleadings.

"Why are you so stressed, If I may ask?" Mehr chirped in, curious to know what the fuss was about.

"Well, everyone in the management level is required to serve duties on occasion, overlooking patient support and complaints. Nirvan explained.
"In fact, you too qualify to serve it, one of these days, you might be added to the roll of honour too" he added with a humorous note.

"Ooooh sounds interesting. Then why is Vinay so upset? He handles the role anyway, doesn't he?" Mehr pouted, her face clearly giving away her sense of confusion.

"Okay, let me explain it this way. Vinay's role involves parts of it, but not entirety of it. And, unlike your regular roles and responsibilities, this particular role is a googly. You never know what kind of a patient request may come up or if a complaint may blow out of proportion" Nirvan rubbed his temples, as if recalling a horrific episode.

"You seem worked up, what is it?" Mehr asked

"Nothing man, just got reminded of this recent episode where one of the patients kept requesting to see a staff they believed was their mother, it was rather difficult to pacify that lady. Poor thing was a degenerate suffering memory loss." Nirvan let out a loud sigh.

Mehr already knew which patient it was he was talking about, and chose not to delve further. Getting back to her previous question, she asked again. "So what is it like, these night duties assigned to people?" Her eyes gleamed with curiosity.

"Well, it is pretty simple. Anyone with prior experience in management, and a basic understanding of the administration is assigned to serve the role. They are provided with all the necessary information and rights to take action in case of emergency situations to address issues and ensure smooth functioning" Nirvan elaborated with printed copies of study material from his drawer.

Mehr ran over the material like a school kid browsing a scholastic bookfair, her eyes eager with the zeal to learn and grasp everything in front of her.

"Tu chinta mat kar, iss month teko hospital rounds and staff familiarization kara k maybe next month we'll give you a chance to explore this avenue" Nirvan pacified her.

"Sounds interesting" Mehr beamed. "So what all are the perks of this duty. I'm sure the person in-charge for the entire space, won't be working from a cubicle. Duh!" Mehr smirked.

"Smart girl haan. Waise we have a dedicated office for all the serving officers as we call it. You get access to all of the security footage, on the system, there is a free meal . . . . . .woh bhi achha wala . . . . and in case if you end up with a rowdy patient request you have an upper limit of a particularly high amount, to pacify the situation whichever way you deam fit. . .Discount de do, gift de do, ya phir acchhe se sorry bol do .  . . . jo bhi karo bas . . ..  Patient chup karke khushi se jana chaiye" Nirvan whispered the last bit in a hushed tone as if hiding a secret.

"Ye to mazedaar sa lagg raha hai yaar. Log dartey kyun hain phir" Mehr was now more puzzled than ever. " Nirvan simply shrugged, barely 8 months in the system and she was diving into one thing after another with her child like curiosity. Nirvan feared she might encounter things she was not exactly ready for. He had seen her fragility in the months that had gone by, but he also knew, no amount of explanation would pacify her curiosity.
Figuring it was for the best to train her for the duties instead of coaxing her not to volunteer, he decided to hand over the guide book he had in his drawer along with all the information brochures for the unit. Only thing he forgot to mention or rather chose not to disclose deliberately was the mystery of room 913.
Eager to a fault, Mehr started devoting her spare time to learning the information brochures, Nirvan gave her, in order to be as well prepared as she could possibly be for when the opportunity arose and she was called upon to serve the role. She was competitive to a fault.
