Just a Dream
It’s pretty late in the night and I decide to call it a night. Checking the clock, it is almost three in the morning. Reading can be just as gripping and addictive as what most of my peers call binge watching. Just one more page and one more chapter, the suspense builds up around what happens next. I shut down my laptop as a civilized person should, who am I kidding? I just turn it to sleep mode, not wanting to close down the multiple tabs I have been running for a week now. I don't even realize slipping into the dream world for it must have been a big fall.
I woke up in my bed, sleepy like a drugged kitten at the vet. Looking around, it was pitch dark, probably someone turned off the light seeing me passed out next to the laptop in bed. I was about to look for my phone when the sound of footsteps alerted me wide awake. It was coming from the hallway. It did not sound like any of my parents or siblings, it was a sound similar to dragged heavy steps like someone was either very tired or about to go on a rampage. Either way, I did not want to know, and tried hiding under covers, I realized the absurdity of my thought process right away. What good can a blanket fort do? And just then a bright light of cyan blue glowed next to my bed. It was similar to the portal holes in sci-fi movies. I did not have much choice but to jump in, as the window in my room opened into the hallway anyway.
Jumping into the portal I found myself on a deserted street that I knew I had never set foot in and yet it felt so familiar, like the birthmark on my left forearm that I see everyday while tying my laces. Always there, never paid attention to but never fully forgotten either. The atmosphere was heavy, like the air just before rain. I felt rather uneasy and wanted to rush home. There were deserted homes in this street that looked like props pulled right out of some 80s horror movie. Broken wooden windows, rustic old door frames, heavily decorated support pillars with missing motifs. It was hauntingly beautiful in an ominous fashion. I could have taken a leisurely stroll down this street if it had been day time, and sun was out. Old buildings look much more scary in the dark somehow. I was brisk walking through the space when I heard a cat cry, and I of all people am scared of cats. I would not be budged if a hound was running towards me in full anger, but a cat even snarling my way would have me standing over a stool on one leg out of fear. I ran as fast as I could without turning back or checking where I was headed until I finally sensed the tension lifting and the air filled up with a light fragrance of the night blooming white flower that recently piqued my interest. Entering this space, I was taken by surprise. All of the most lovely flowers In the world I had ever seen were blooming here, and while It was still dark, the night felt pleasant. The air was fresh, filled with a mild scent of whatever shrub I stepped by, thus changing in essence and intensity with each step I took. It was hard to describe, for I had never seen anything like it before. The smell was like the first bite of a ripe mango pulled right out of a water tub on a hot summer day while sitting in swimming trunks as a child. The relish could only be felt but not described. I was wide eyed with amazement. The ground was covered with a wild grass like I had never scene before, wide leafy and tall. The vines had pearly fruits with a crystal sheen and they were all living plants. In the distance I could see orchid flowers almost as big as a grown elephant. I knew by now that I was definitely dreaming, but this was all too good to walk away from or force my self wake up from. I walked tirelessly for hours and hours and the vast expanse wouldn’t end. Insects of exotic kinds buzzed over flowers, thankfully never coming too close to myself. As much as I was enjoying the tour of this blooming wonderland, I was growing tired and exhausted. My legs were tired by now, walking through god knows how long that stretch had been I wanted to go home and get to my bed, and as I thought of that, another gateway similar to the first one appeared. Again Cyan blue light, all around it, with a sheen so beautiful, it mesmerized me. I jumped into this one, to my surprise it lead me right into the hallway that leads to my room. It was dark, and probably late in the night. I was groggy with sleep and wanted to rest my head on my pillow and go to sleep. I trudged wearily towards my room, the lights were out. I reached the foot of my bed and saw a small dark void like circle surrounded by the most beautiful cyan blue light I had ever seen. I lifted my weight onto the bed and as I rested my head on the pillow, the last thing I remember was the sparkling orb of cyan blue going out as I shut my eyes. I had barely closed my eyes that I heard my alarm clock go off, and I woke up with a gasp. Sunrays from the hallway were streaming into my room through the window, dad must have opened that. He never woke me up but left the window open after eight so the sunrays could work their magic I suppose. It had been a tiring night and while I was in bed the whole night, it felt like I had not rested at all. And as I sipped onto water, I could barely recall any of the events from last night. That was until I saw my sister’s cyan blue bracelet on my night stand and everything came back in a flashback.
I simply sat in my bed and smiled.
